What to Expect in Counseling

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to make the process clear, supportive, and centered around your comfort and needs.

The Counseling Process

Step 1

Book a Consultation

The consult is typically a 15-minute phone call where you can ask us questions and we can assess the kind of help you’re looking for. This also gives both of us a chance to determine if we would be a good fit for working together.

Step 2

Schedule + New Client Paperwork

Once we’ve decided to move forward, we’ll book your first appointment (virtual and in-person options available). We’ll also send the necessary paperwork for you to complete electronically before your first appointment.

Step 3

Begin Sessions

In the first session, we’ll learn a little more about you, your history, and your story. From there, we’ll work together to establish treatment goals and a plan for achieving them. LITD, we lean on a combination of well-researched therapies to inform treatment.

Step 4

Ongoing Support

Our goal is not to create lifelong clients. It’s to empower you to know that you are capable and have the tools to flourish, whatever life may bring. We’ll celebrate your growth, review the tools at your disposal, and agree on a cadence for follow up, if needed.

What Happens During the First Session?

Your first session is focused on understanding your story, your concerns, and your goals for counseling. There is no pressure to share everything immediately. Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

Your provider may ask about past experiences, current stressors, relationships, emotional patterns, and what support you are hoping to receive.

You are also encouraged to ask questions and discuss any concerns about the counseling process.

Ongoing Counseling Support

Counseling is not one-size-fits-all. Your provider will work collaboratively with you to create goals, build coping strategies, process difficult experiences, and support long-term healing and growth.

Some clients attend counseling short term for a specific challenge, while others benefit from longer-term support.
